Mayor's Office   mayor@cityofsemmes.org

How do you like the new City Newsletter? (for those reading this online, our new newsletter will be mailed out the week of June 11th!)   I am very excited to have this new method of getting information out to everyone in the Semmes Community.  Our Administrative Assistant has done a wonderful job of pulling together the layout (thanks Brandi!).  Look for our newsletter to be delivered to your mailbox every month and stay up to date on the latest happenings in our City!

I've been working on so many items since my last newsletter at the end of February.  Probably many more than I could even dare to fit into this column, so I'll just try to hit the most important topics.  First, let me say that the City is doing very well and things have been very busy.

An update on annexations - we annexed over 130 properties into the City Limits in February & March.  All of these annexations were by "owner petition", meaning that the owner of the property requested to join the City.  It's exciting to me that everyone wants to be included and be a part of our new city.  That alone says so much about the pride that our citizens have in the Semmes Community.  We still have many more annexation petitions to process and will be processing more through the City Council in September and October.   If you are interested in joining the new City of Semmes please call City Hall at 251/649-8811 for more specific information.   Also, the Annexation Petition Form is available on the City website at www.cityofsemmes.org/forms.htm

Look for progress to begin on a new Honor Park and also a Municipal Park as well.... we'll be holding public input meetings as soon as the designs are completed.  So please plan on attending these meetings - we want to hear what you have to say!

We continue to partner with our Semmes Volunteer Fire Department.  If you've driven by the fire station on Wulff Road (Station #1), you'll notice that the station is now manned 24/7.  This is because the City has hired 4 full-time firefighters who rotate 24 hour shifts.  By having a firefighter at the station 24/7, our response times to fires, accidents and medical calls are faster.  Just a few minutes can save a life.   Public safety is so important to me and to everyone that I've spoken with in the Semmes Community.   This is your tax dollars at work - providing you, your family and your neighbors with a safer place to live!

When a community is prospering and heading in a positive direction, businesses owners are attracted to the area.  I'd like to welcome Mattress Depot to Semmes (7930 Moffett Rd by Papa Johns & Eyeglass World).  Also, opening soon will be A1 Chinese & Hibachi in the Liberty Square Shopping Center behind CVS at the corner of Moffett & Wulff Road.  At the beginning of August, on the opposite corner, Walgreens is scheduled to open!  I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- the City of Semmes wants to be a “business friendly” city – by attracting new business we also gain new jobs for our citizens.

I hope that you enjoy our newsletter.  Please feel free to send me your comments - I'd love to hear from you!  My email is mayor@cityofsemmes.org

Be informed - Get involved and help us to make Semmes THE shining star of Mobile County! Remember my OPEN DOOR FRIDAYS from 9 AM till 2 PM – drop by for a cup of coffee!
