From the Mayor's Office       mayor@cityofsemmes.org

We’re rolling into the New Year at full speed!  The City of Semmes has had a productive last 6 months and now a busy start to 2012.

To kick off the newsletter this month, I would like to talk about our committees and some of the projects that we have going on, as well as the Council Members who chair them.

There are 6 committees:  Finance; City Hall; Public Works; Annexation; Public Safety; and Parks, Recreation & Beautification.

Each committee has 2 City Council Members (one of which is the “Chair”) and 3 Community Members.  The Committees each have a Charter and well-defined goals and directives.  The committee meetings are open to the public and we value input from you!  Because Semmes is now a city,
YOU HAVE A VOICE!!!

I’ll start with the Finance Committee which is the committee that I chair as Mayor.  Our job is to audit and monitor the monthly financials as well as advise the City Council on financial matters.   As Mayor, I chair this committee because it directly relates to my job regarding the City Budget and expenditure of funds.  It’s my responsibility to make sure your tax dollars are spent (and saved) wisely!

The City Hall Committee is chaired by Council Member Jerry Shirey.  This Committee originally began with a goal of securing the City a location for City Hall and our Council Chambers.  For those who attended the City Hall dedication in December, you can see what a wonderful facility we have.   It is definitely something for our residents to be proud of!  The work was contracted with Semmes businesses – and the results are quality at a reasonable price.  I would love to have you drop by City Hall for a tour, or even better yet – plan on attending one of our committee meetings or a City Council meeting.

Your Public Works Committee is chaired by Council Member David Baker.  This committee has a very big job ahead as we move into taking over our roads and right-of-ways in May of 2013.  By State Code, Mobile County will maintain roads and right-of-ways until that time.  But you can imagine what a job this will be to make sure we have a smooth transition in 2013.   A large portion of a city’s budget is allocated for Public Works.

Council Member Teresa Bonner is the Chair of the Annexation Committee.  And, in our first Council meeting in February, the Council will be voting on annexing 40 or more properties into the City Limits!  We want to grow our new city and reach out to those that we could not originally include.  And to do this, we’re back out knocking on doors.  Annexation into the City is by “property owner petition”. The response to annexation has been tremendous J   If you are interested, please attend one of the Annexation Committee meetings!

Public Safety is one of the most important functions of a city – we must protect our citizens.  Council Member Mary Calhoun is our Public Safety Committee Chair.  Public Safety is concerned with police and fire protection and I believe everyone would agree how important this is.  I have to thank Sheriff Sam Cochran because his department is doing an outstanding job of policing our city limits and the 1.5 police jurisdiction.  We are happy to have them patrolling our community once again.  Our fire protection is covered by the Semmes Volunteer Fire Department.  And we are so fortunate to now have a means of helping them by providing things like grants to purchase equipment.  This makes our community a safer place to live, work and play.   Also, by supporting our SVFD, we can directly improve our ISO rating which results in lower home insurance rates!

Council Member Phillip Dodd’s passion is making Semmes a beautiful community – the shining star of Mobile County .  This has been his dream since he first became involved in the incorporation process.  The Parks, Rec and Beautification Committee has many projects they are working on including a Veteran’s Memorial Park to honor our Semmes veterans.  Also, the committee is looking at several beautification projects and a “don’t litter” program to help make people more aware of keeping our city clean and litter-free.

So join us – all meetings are OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!  Be informed - Get involved
and help us to make Semmes THE shining star of Mobile County !  Remember my OPEN DOOR FRIDAYS from 9 AM till 2 PM – drop by for a cup of coffee
J
