From the Mayor's Office

This past month has been a very busy one.  As October comes to a close, so does much of the construction and renovation of the front half of our new City Hall.  We will begin to move into the new offices this week and prepare for the next construction phase.   Thank you to everyone for bearing with us through these growing pains.   It will be so nice to finally get moved into our new offices.  Through the incorporation process and start up of our new city, we've been working on borrowed plastic folding tables, metal folding chairs and with our own personal computers and printers.  Soon we will actually have real desks and phones!  I plan on holding a City Hall "Grand Opening & Dedication" as soon as everything is completed - so stay tuned for the invitation with the date and time.

Our City Hall hours are from 9 AM till 5 PM – Monday through Friday.  Our City Hall is located in the Century Bank Building next to WalMart.   Last month, I invited you to come and visit City Hall and meet with me on  "Open Door Fridays" - between 9 AM and 2 PM - no appointment necessary.  As a result, I had some great meetings with citizens of our community.  Communication is so important!   My invitation is still open and I hope that you will stop by!  I welcome your input, suggestions and questions.  If you'd like to meet at a specific time on a Friday, call 649-8811 to schedule.

I am very pleased to report that our first month of sales tax revenue exceeded expectations!   If we stay on track with the sales tax revenue that we received from August sales, we should exceed our budgeted revenues for the coming fiscal year.  October will start the beginning of our Fiscal Year 2011-2012 - the first full year of our new City being "in business" so to speak.  The City's business year runs from October 1st through September 30th, as does most Alabama cities.     The best thing is that every dime of sales tax revenue will be used right here in Semmes to make our community the best place to live and work!  I am so excited to see the great things that this next year holds for us.

Our Planning Commission has been working long hours this past month on the City's proposed Subdivision Regulations.  The 2nd Draft was made available online for the Public Hearing that was scheduled for October 18th.   Another Public Hearing will soon be scheduled for our next draft.  Please check the website www.cityofsemmes.org for the date, place and time - and make plans to attend the public hearing if possible. Your input is vital to the growth of our community.  The subdivision process is an important element in a community’s management of its growth.  We want to provide for growth and yet preserve our community character.

Once again this month, I would like to emphasize communication and I am very happy to share the City cell phone numbers for all of our Council.  These five officials have been elected "at-large" to serve our community – meaning that you can contact any or all of them.  Please feel free to contact them (or myself) with your concerns, ideas and suggestions via cell phone or email:

Stay in touch by checking our City's website:  www.cityofsemmes.org. You'll find the latest information on City business as well as when and where public meetings are scheduled.   If you would like to correspond with me via email - my address is mayor@cityofsemmes.org.  I'd love to hear from you.   Or, if you have any questions, please call the office phone at 649-8811.

I am still just as excited about our possibilities as a new city as I was in August of 2010 when our new city was voted into existence by an almost 3-to-1 "in favor" vote.  There are so many great things happening in Semmes!   We have new businesses opening each month (special welcome to Cockrell's Body Shop!).  And for everyone wondering - the latest info I received from Foosackyl's is that they are planning to open during the first half of November if construction stays on schedule.  Are you planning on opening a business in Semmes?  If so, please let me know :-)

Before I close, I would like to thank Semmes First Baptist Church for opening their doors and allowing us to hold our City Council and Planning Commission meetings in their Fellowship Hall.  Bro. Gaston and all the members have shown us the true meaning of "Community" - helping one another....  and please take that thought with you as we enter the upcoming holiday season.  Lend a helping hand to someone in need - and let's always be thankful for our blessings.

Judith Hale, Mayor
